The Old World

"Your Work Builds Tomorrow."

A dystopian science-fantasy setting set in an alternate industrial age where the transistor was never invented. Society is governed by the SSC Corporation, an institution that oversees every aspect of civilisation through bureaucracy, infrastructure, education, and labour. Order is valued above freedom, usefulness above individuality, and progress above all else.

Overview

The Old World presents itself as the pinnacle of human civilisation. Disease is controlled, unemployment does not exist, cities are efficient, and every citizen has a defined place within society. From birth to death, education, employment, healthcare, housing, and civic records are all managed by SSC Corporation.

Citizens are taught that these systems exist to protect them, and that civilisation survives only when every person contributes according to their ability.

Beyond the Old World lies the New Frontier, a vast continent undergoing expansion. Publicly celebrated as a land of opportunity and renewal, it is in reality a harsh industrial frontier that supplies the Old World with the resources needed to sustain its prosperity.

Themes

Society

Society is organised into five civic classes.

A citizen's opportunities, privileges, healthcare, housing, and career are shaped by their civic standing and usefulness to society.

Government

Civilisation is administered by the SSC Corporation, whose authority is derived from the Second Charter. Although a government still exists in theory, SSC has absorbed almost every public institution and now functions as the practical authority over daily life.

Technology

Technology followed a different path from our own.

Without the invention of the transistor, society relies on vacuum tubes, relays, analogue instruments, mechanical computers, steam power, and vast electromechanical infrastructure. Massive geothermal plants power the Old World, while the New Frontier depends on coal and an ever expanding railway network.

The New Frontier

The New Frontier is the edge of civilisation.

New settlements, mines, railways, and industries push steadily into an untamed continent rich in resources. Volunteers seek opportunity, while Reclaimants are sent there as part of corrective labour programmes. It is a land of ambition, hardship, and constant expansion.
